The short answer is no. If you are a healthy child or adult, the risk of being harmed by measles infection is extremely low. In fact, measles used to be viewed as a routine childhood illness – a rite of passage, so the speak – that every child caught and became immune too for the rest of their lives.
Medical experts who promote vaccines and vaccine mandates have historically over-emphasized the risks of measles in their efforts to encourage vaccination. Risks such as hospitalization, pneumonia complications, encephalitis (brain infection), and death are way over-estimated. In reality, for children and adults who are healthy and well-nourished, the risk of being permanently disabled or dying from measles is estimated to be about 1 in every 93,000 cases (Butler JC, et al; Measles severity and serum retinol (vitamin A) concentration among children in the United States, Pediatrics 1993).
